welcome to Tagore Gandhi Insitute

Profile: The Tagore-Gandhi Institute is a centre for higher studies set up by a body of Indian, Asian and global educationists, teachers and experts, all inspired and driven by the passionate conviction that the time has come for making a radical and transformative intervention in the field of higher education. Currently, globalizing trends and market-economics rule our lives. The Tagore-Gandhi Institute inspired by the thought, work and teachings of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi, both great educationists as well as universal exemplars, weds values and vision to practical, material needs and requirements. Hence the objectives of the Institute: to contribute to learning, to offer learner-centered courses, to encourage social service and social awareness in (and about) India, the East and the West.

We are based in Kolkata. Why Kolkat?

Because Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) is the city which was born of the most intense East-West culture encounters over seen in the annals of human civilization in recent time. Because Kolkata, a cosmopolitan megametropolis where the whole of India’s diversity fuses into one, is also an exiting site of intellectual fervor and stimulation. Because Kolkata is also a gateway to the rest of India—East and North East India in particular—where major religions like Buddhism and neo-Vedanta were born, where Christian missionaries proselytized and shaped tribal cultures, where radical politics and anti-colonialism touched upon the destiny of nations. And simply because Kolkata is a mind-enlarging experience in terms of its positives and manifold contrarieties—its humaneness and energy, its poverty and simplicity, its variety and vitality. It’s the gateway not only to the East but to the rest of India and South Asia.
