Abstract
The concept of ‘space’ has always been an area that continues to capture Sociological imagination since the very inception of the subject. Starting from Durkheim, whose detailed analysis of society’s notion of space as part of his overall schema of sacred/profane distinction (in religion in particular), ‘meanings’ of ‘space’ and how the same are constructed ‘collectively’ by a community has constituted an important area of research for many scholars. This paper looks at how a particular community- the Meiteis, constructs ‘meaningful spaces’ collectively through their participation in the sociocultural processes of interactions with one another, the mythological memories expressed and reaffirmed through community rites and rituals, and the traditional belief system as well as their adaptation to a changing socio-cultural environment.
